Fantasy Ranch

When a publisher wanted to bring the excitement of a horse ranch into their homes, they brought in Forever Stoked to help with the development.

The Brief

Forever Stoked was brought in to help with development on a game aimed specifically at fans of the horse ranch experience. The goal was to create a game that allowed them to bring the excitement of the Horse ranch into their homes.

The Challenge

This was a project targeted at super-fans of a very particular hobby with its own language, complexities, and elements. It needed to “trot the trot” the fans, and the ranches themselves would reject it totally. At the same time, this would be a game targeted at a demographic that didn’t identify as gamers or have much, if any, experience with modern board games. The game would need to deliver all the specificity and the resulting complexity of the Horse Ranch world that the super-fan would require with rules and design that were approachable and accessible for non-gamers.

THE PROJECT

Kick off your boots and pull up a chair for a game where all your dreams of owning a beautiful ranch with a stable full of horses can come true. Take real-life ranching to the tabletop as you choose from a wide variety of actual horses, hire highly skilled hands, and expand your property by laying claim to some of the most beautiful land in the west.

Hire employees which give you additional actions or powers to help you meet your goals. Twist of Fate cards give you rewards if you can complete the requirements but act fast since other players could beat you to them.

Win shows by rolling dice based on your horses’ show skills. Horses with more training will have an advantage but the dice represents how unpredictable horses can be!

Win trophies by collecting sets of horses, competing Twist of Fate, owning land, completing ranches, and taking over other players’ property! The game mixes area control with resource management to create a lightweight fun intro game

Success

Fantasy Ranch was successful on multiple levels. The design commitment to authenticity created a game where horse ranches didn’t just approve of the way the game approached their world, they actively wanted their own actual ranches and horses to be featured in the game.  The fans were excited to have another way to engage their hobby and found the game approachable enough that they were willing to put in the time to not just learn the rules but to master them so they could create the Fantasy Ranch of their dreams.
